Snowdome

2013 - present

Snowdome takes place in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, where constant snow falls on a densely populated, modern society.  This project began in 2013, when over the course of thirty days, thirty feet of snow buried the cities and land.  The endless snow creates a landscape that feels foreign and imaginative, putting the mind into a nearly euphoric state.  However, this mental state is quickly disturbed by the daily responsibilities of snow removal. This serves as a constant reminder to the delicate balance that stands between natural order and modern demands.  Highlighting Japan’s long and tumultuous relationship to nature, one that is filled with superstitions, daily ritual and a pending sense of impermanence.
